Semen Analysis FAQ
Please see the following instructions for the collection of your semen sample for semen analysis. If you wish to book a semen analysis at the Merrion Fertility Clinic, please complete our Request Form which also contains guidelines to ensure the most accurate result is obtained.
Patients who have an upcoming consultation with a Doctor at the Merrion Fertility Clinic do not have copies of their test results sent to their GP unless requested by the patient.
How do I make an appointment for semen analysis?
Semen analyses are carried out Monday to Friday 08:10 to 10:00, by appointment only. To make an appointment, please phone Merrion Fertility Clinic on (01) 6635000 or email us at email@example.com. The laboratory works strictly by appointment only – any semen samples given without an appointment will not be accepted under any circumstance and hence will not be analysed.
How much does a semen analysis cost?
The fee for semen analysis is €120 for the first test and €100 for subsequent testing if necessary. For further information please view our full price list for fertility checks and treatments
If the test has been requested by a Doctor at the Public OPD clinic at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, there will be no charge.
Will I receive a copy of my test result?
Results or copies of the results will not be given directly to the patient by the Merrion Fertility Clinic. This is the referring doctor’s responsibility.
Do I need a referral letter from my GP or referring doctor?
You must have a referring doctor to whom these results are being sent. You will be asked for this information when you are booking your appointment, and you may bring a referral letter or a copy of our semen analysis request form, stamped by your referring doctor, with you on the day of your appointment.
How long will it take for my results to be sent to my referring doctor?
Results are reported to the referring doctor within 10 days of the semen sample being analysed. If your doctor requires the results for a specific date, please advise us of this at the time of booking.
What are the instructions for semen sample collection?
Your semen sample must be collected in one of the sterile Sarstedt containers provided by Merrion Fertility Clinic. Please do not use other containers such as those available in your GP office or in pharmacies, as they may be toxic to sperm. A private room is available at the clinic to produce your semen sample. If you wish to produce at home, you will need to be able to have your semen sample in the clinic within one hour of producing it. Those unable to meet this time frame should produce here in the clinic. Your semen sample must be obtained by masturbation into the container.
Please note: all patients undergoing semen analysis are recommended to abstain from ejaculation from between 2 and 5 days before your appointment. Shorter or longer periods of time may lead to misleading results.
