Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is used to diagnose or treat problems in the pelvis.

A laparoscope is a small telescope that is inserted through your abdominal wall at the level of your umbilicus (belly button). The laparoscope transmits the image of your pelvis onto a TV screen.

Other instruments can be used along with the laparoscope for treatment and are inserted through small cuts in your abdominal wall. Laparoscopy is performed under general anaesthetic, when you are asleep.

Why is laparoscopy done?

Laparoscopy can be used for diagnosing and treating endometriosis, scar tissue (adhesions) and to check for blockages in the fallopian tubes.

For further information on laparoscopy, please discuss with your Merrion Fertility Clinic Doctor.
